ABOUT ME I live and work as an artist in Devon, England. For many years I worked in London as an architect specialising in urban regeneration and contributed to the UK´s successful Olympic bid. I moved to the coast in 2006 to concentrate on my art and to bring up my young family by the sea. “Making my drawings is about losing myself in an imaginary world. I use spatters of colour as seeds or I start from the bottom and work upwards, seeing where my pen takes me.” With a background in retail my wife Karen handles the business side of things. ABOUT MY WORK As an artist I am often asked what my work is like. I always find it hard to answer this question, mainly because I work in a variety of styles and in a variety of media. My drawings often start with ink splashes or marks on the paper, not completely random as I choose colour, and intensity of distribution, but chance plays a large part. Once the ink or paint has dried I come back to them – sometimes months later – and look for shapes, perhaps in the way that people look for recognisable forms in clouds. I like drawing lots of small things. I take a piece of paper about 10cm square and splash some ink on it. These marks become tiny figures. I fill a piece of paper with them and then say to myself “What are all these characters up to?”. I think writing a caption transforms the drawing from a pleasant doodle into something else. It contextualises the drawing in a way that surprises and delights. The joy for me is that the technique allows me to discover stories. Another technique which has a similar outcome is just to start at the bottom and work up the page. It seems simple but it is actually very liberating. I know that I don't have to worry about what the drawing will be. This is how I did my 'Little Men' series. I would have an idea for a scenario, such as a middle eastern flavoured setting, or a great construction project. I pencilled in some regular grid lines to keep the perspective consistent, and then just started drawing, seeing what happens. With some of these I did a bit of visual research, wanting to include particular buildings, but on the whole there was no underlying plan, just a technique that I knew would take me from A-Z. This 'start at the bottom' and work up approach is one that I have also adopted with my drawings of cityscapes. Again these are unplanned, I have no idea what's going to appear on the page. It really feels akin to that experience of looking at a map then seeing the reality unfold. It has the same thrill of walking the streets of an unfamiliar city, never knowing what you are going to find round the next corner. I have recently begun to combine these methodologies to make larger canvases and ink drawings. They feel like the different strands coming together: partly reintroducing paint into my work, but also using the 'guided' randomness to provide a framework in which I create a part of a city and then people it with tiny little stories, many of them mysterious and open to the interpretation of the viewer. I can't help seeing these canvases and drawings as part of a conurbation of some sort, I'm gradually exploring the various neighbourhoods.
