Thank you for the #FFs and that sort of thing

Ever since I've been on twitter I've tried to reply to people as much as possible and to thank people individually for #FFs.

I've finally reached the stage where I just can't manage it any more. It really is taking too much time and my wife Karen is beating me with a metaphorical stick for spending too much time on twitter as it is. (She's not the baddy in this - she's right, and I lack self-discipline!)

So, in brief, I do read all my replies and I often laugh, frown, fume etc. even though I may not reply. I read and appreciate every #FF and I want to thank you for them. So I will:

Thank you!

As a corollary to this, I also prefer to #FF people individually on other days of the week. Generally Follow Fridays seem to be more a way of acknowledging people you like than generally garnering more support. I think that's fine, but like anything it becomes devalued if it's just a mechanical process, which I know it can be because I've done it myself. So I think #FFs are better when you can really make them count, but that's just my view and I still love to get them myself!

People sometimes ask me for a follow. Generally I follow people who amuse or interest me in some way. But the truth is I hardly read my timeline because I tend to spend most of my time replying. This also extends to people who say 'help me get more followers'. I had no more than 100 followers for the first year or so. My advice is: join in, be entertaining and likeable and the #FFs will flow.

One last footnote. If you've been on twitter for a while you'll know that #FF doesn't mean Follow Friday any more it just means Follow. So don't ever tweet "OMG is it Friday already?!?" if I stick #FF next to someone's name on a Tuesday.

I'm bored now. Bye.
